Biomaterials

Bio-based materials, otherwise known as ‘biomaterials’, are plastics that have been made using biodegradable resources.

Today, there is a rapid development of bio-based and biodegradable materials that can be used as raw materials for injection moulded parts. Here, at Tojos Plast, we are proud to boast extensive experience in conducting injection moulding with this type of material. Our team is constantly keeping up to date in terms of what new biomaterials have become available. We are also always interested in trying out new materials in both existing and upcoming projects.

Bio-Based vs. Biodegradable

There is a difference between bio-based and biodegradable materials:

  • Bio-Based Materials
Bio-based materials are plastics made from fully or partially renewable resources. For example, these renewable resources could be corn, sugar cane, castor oil or wood fibre.
  • Biodegradable Materials
On the other hand, plastic is biodegradable if it can be broken down by microorganisms. In some cases, various basic materials and additives can be added to the plastic, which can result in the material breaking down at a much faster rate than that of traditional plastics.
